Stop saying "thank you so much" in your pay review

Pay negotiation.

This isn't entitlement. It's maths. I learned this the hard way.

Hey Sparklers,

Quick one for you because it's that time of year.

And if you're reading this thinking 'my review isn't until January' - that's exactly why you need to read this NOW.

End of year reviews. Conversations about compensation. The bit where you sit across from your manager and either advocate for yourself or… don't.

I've watched too many smart women fumble this moment (me included). They walk in hopeful.
They walk out saying "thank you so much" for whatever number they were handed, like it was a favour, not a transaction.

You were hired at a price. That price was based on who you were then.

If you've grown since, delivered more, solved harder problems, taken on more responsibility, the price has changed.

That's not entitlement. That's just maths.

But most people blow it because they lead with feelings instead of strategy.

"I feel like I deserve more" = you've already lost the room.

"Based on the data, I'm compensated 30% below market rate and I'd like to discuss closing that gap" = NOW we're in business.

I learned this the hard way early in my career.
Found out I was being paid 30% less than a bloke doing the same job. Same title. Less experience than me. But somehow worth more.

Went home and cried. Then got angry. Then got tactical.

Started tracking every win. Built a one-page case. Practised the exact words until they didn't come out with the wobbles and tears.

Here's the opener that changed everything for me:

"I'd like to discuss aligning my compensation with my current contributions and market rate."

Not feelings. Facts.

I've made an 8-minute video breaking down exactly how to do this - how to prepare, how to practise, and how to walk in with the confidence to walk away if you need to.

Hello Sparkler, Right. Quick question. Have you ever spent ages crafting the "perfect" post, agonised over every word, made sure it was polished and professional and on-brand... and then watched it disappear into the void while some random person's messy, off-the-cuff thing goes viral? Yeah. Me too. For about thirty years. I've spent a hundred conversations telling other people how to build a personal brand. Be consistent. Be professional. Find your niche. Post on a schedule. And I did all of...

Hello Sparkler, You're doing the work. You're showing up. You're putting things out there. You're building something you believe in. And some days it feels like absolutely nobody is watching. I know that feeling. Intimately. So when I found out that Olivia Dean performed to four people in 2023, and then won a Grammy in 2026, I needed to understand how. Not the luck. Not the breaks. The actual mechanics of how someone goes from an empty room to the most commercially coveted artist in Britain...

Hello Sparkler, Ever waited to feel ready? Waited for someone to finally notice how brilliant you are? Built your entire sense of worth on what other people think of you? Yeah. Me too. So I did something slightly unhinged this week. I asked an AI to tell me the harsh truths that younger Nishma desperately needed to hear. Not the motivational poster version. The actual uncomfortable, slightly stinging, "oh god is that true about me?" version. And wow... it delivered. Some of it made me wince....
